Anishnabe of Grassy Narrows First Nation in northeastern Ontario battle clearcut logging and the effects of colonial and industrial invasion of their homeland. - Beaver Lake Cree - northeastern Alberta
"The Beaver Lake Cree, a small, impoverished band of 900 people in eastern Alberta, are suing the Canadian federal and Alberta provincial governments to protect the land. The tar sands are obliterating their traditional hunting and fishing lands in Alberta. The animals, fish, plants and medicine that sustain the Beaver Lake Cree are being destroyed." - Coastal First Nations - B.C.

The Sutikalh Camp is dedicated to the preservation of the pristine area of the Melvin Creek Valley, also known as Sutikalh or Winter Spirit. Members of the St'at'imc Nation established this permanent camp in 2000 to protest the proposed development of a 500 million dollar ski resort by Nancy Greene Raine and her husband Al Raine (NGR) in the Cayoosh Mountain Range. - Tsilhqot'in - Teztan Biny
"Taseko Mines Ltd. is proposing to develop the Prosperity Mine, a massive open pit gold and copper mine, deep within the traditional territory of the Tsilhqot'in Nation. The proposed mine's two kilometer-wide open pit, tailings pond, waste rock piles, roads, and transmission lines would destroy an entire sub-alpine ecosystem, and most importantly Teztan Biny, a lake sacred to the Tsilhqot'in Nation, and known to others as Fish Lake." - Yup'ik - Bristol Bay, Alaska
Native and non-native Alaskans oppose the proposed Pebble gold and copper mine in the headwaters of one of the most productive salmon spawning areas in North America.

Exhibition on Now, The New Gallery Main Space
I'm happy to announce that my most recent work in the Freedom Fighter Series is now on view in an exhibition entitled North, at The New Gallery's main gallery in Art Central. The show runs until July 30, with an opening reception scheduled for Thursday, July 7 (First Thursday). Hope you can make it!

+15 Window Exhibition Coming Up in June
From June 4 to July 30, 2011, you can view my mini-series, Assail, Fight, Protest, Slam at The New Gallery's +15 Window space in Calgary's Epcor Centre for Performing Arts. While you're downtown this summer, check out Natalie Ball's Indian Circumvented at The New Gallery's main space in Art Central. I'm certainly looking forward to viewing Natalie's work for the first time!

On Now @ the MAG
My work is included in two shows on now at the Red Deer Museum & Art Gallery. AFA's travelling exhibition Narrative Quest, featuring a selection of artworks by aboriginal artists, including my painting Magpie, is on now through April 3. Accompanying Narrative Quest is an exhibition of artworks from the museum's collection, and includes several Freedom Fighter paintings. For more info on what's on at the MAG, go here.

A new addition to The Freedom Fighter Series, this set of four paintings honours four northern Alberta First Nations and their resistance to the oil industry's invasion of their territories. Happy Riel Day
While it's National Flag Day in Canada and Family Day here in Alberta, it's Louis Riel Day in Manitoba, where they celebrate the life and struggle of the great Metis leader on the third Monday in February, since 2007. Riel lobbied for Metis and First Nation representation in Ottawa in the 1800's, and led two armed resistance efforts against the government of Canada when his people were pushed aside in the settling of the west. Sadly, those efforts failed, and the Metis were scattered and dispossessed. Despite this, the Metis Nation is now alive and well in Canada.
